Illinois State Capitol - Dome

Location:

Springfield, IL

Architect:

Bailey Edward Architects

The Illinois State Capitol was constructed between 1868 and 1888, and at 361 feet, it is the tallest capitol dome in the United States. As part of a multi-phased approach, the team performed a structural conditions assessment, non-destructive and material testing and a preliminary structural analysis of the wrought iron dome and masonry drum walls. The preliminary analysis included hand calculations, graphic analysis, as well as 2D and 3D finite element analysis. Jeffrey Beane was the project manager and lead engineer for all phases of investigation and analysis from 2019-2021.*
